I read with alarm that enrollment in Computer Science programs declined in University of California system for the first time since the dot com bust. More people are apparently opting for courses like cybersecurity, AI, data science because they feel that AI will destroy computer science. On the contrary, if AI destroys anything, it will be specialized courses that teach “practical knowledge” ( the original reason why IT was forked out from CS in the 90s) because AI can deduce higher level abstractions from patterns better than humans but cannot reason (the “reasoning” mode in LLMs is false advertising, it’s more compute intensive pattern matching). Computer Science teaches reasoning, the precise thing AI is nowhere close to doing. Years ago, my first job interview. 3rd year in college. It’s IBM. The interviewer (in those days they did this) was doing the bad cop routine and asked me “you don’t know how to program in Java? Aren’t you ashamed?” Now this was a 21 year old me. It was hot, and it was ten at night, and I would not have said this today (life has shown me my place) But then my response was this: “If you want to hire Java programmers, there is an Aptech down by 8b bus-stand. But you are here hiring in JUCSE. I don’t know Java, because I have never felt the need to learn it. I know how to program, I know how operating systems work, and the only thing that I feel ashamed of is that I am having to explain this in an IBM interview” I got the job (it was y2k heyday) But the point stands. A computer science degree is the best hedge against AI if you want to be in tech.
