I've been doing some research on FaceBook's sam3-bf16 model that appeared in mlx-community today thanks to the work by @Prince_Canuma. I was curious as how how it would work on my M5 Max, what the requirements were and how the various quants and parameters differed performance-wise. I tried the 4bit, 8bit and bf16. Firstly, and critically, the bf16 was actually the fastest. Not only that but it was, sort of obviously the best, the others suffered from noise. So what's the advantage of the 4 and 8 bit? Frankly there isn't one. Memory usage was almost identical. 4 and 8 bit memory usage was just 87% and 91% of the bf16 respectively, the latter using a fraction over 4GB in my tests (1008px^2). Resolution was the main performance indicator, I tried 336, 504, 672 and 1008 pixels and got 6x, 3x and 2x over the base 1008 px base. Using the bf16 I was able to track 6 objects at 18.4 fps at 336x336 resolution. Perhaps not obvious so worth mentioning is that memory usage is the same for a single image or 30 minutes of video, the buffers are re-used. Lastly short concrete nouns work best, e.g. "cat" or "ear" works better than "the cat", "pet" didn't work at all. "fluffy cat" and "a cat on a bed" weren't great either. This me feeding Jackdaws (a member of the crow family) being tracked at 720p.

Ćwiczenia Hedgehog 2025 były jednymi z największych w regionie bałtyckim – ponad 16 000 żołnierzy z 12 krajów NATO, w tym brytyjska brygada i estońska dywizja. W jednym z kluczowych scenariuszy symulowano atak NATO na „stronę ukraińską” jako OPFOR. xAI is officially being acquired by SpaceX! According to Bloomberg, the deal gives SpaceX a valuation of $1 trillion, and xAI a value of $250 billion, for a combined valuation of $1.25 trillion at a combined share price of $526.59, in an all stock deal. The exact conversion ratio from xAI shares to SpaceX shares has yet to be officially confirmed, and the process may take weeks or months to finalize.
