This should serve as the best example of how the obsession with "realism" in graphics only leads to the death of art style and tone. This shit looks terrible, I don't care how "impressive" the tech is, it looks like shit.

well meaning or not, RE5 is racially insensitive. Noah Caldwell-Gervais has a (fantastic) 8 hour long vid about the history of RE. Here’s a short edited clip where he talks about RE5 using an argument laid out by the Raoul Peck documentary Exterminate All The Brutes.

So here's the dealio. I'm a defender of Resident Evil 7. It brings back the level design of the original PS1 games but for first person. It prioritizes horror based on mechanics. It actually has puzzles. (Sparse and easy ones, but it's something). Resource management actually matters.
HOWEVER. It still doesn't feel like "Resident Evil." It feels like a new IP heavily inspired by Resident Evil. I can't ever call it "peak survival horror" when games like Fatal Frame II, Silent Hill 4, and even modern games like Tormented Souls all exists. It's slightly above "Mid Tier" survival horror. That's not saying the game ITSELF is mid, but in the grand scheme of survival horror, it doesn't come close to "peak."

Resident Evil 7 is peak survival horror. Capcom effortlessly blends the culturally relevant horror games from that era with the secret sauce that is Resident Evil to create an all time classic. It’s no less terrifying today than it was almost a decade ago.
