@dieworkwear i've been reading Deluxe by Dana Thomas recently and it tells so many stories just like this, except that it was published in 2007 so is missing an additional decade and a half of continued late capitalist bullshit... a fascinating but depressing history

@dieworkwear learned about this bc bernadette banner has a video where she pad stitches a coat lapel to achieve this effect, it's wildly labor intensive but the effect is undeniable

One of the interesting things about the Solito family's tailoring is how much curvature they build into the lapel roll (the area where the lapel folds over). This is achieved using a hand tailoring technique called hand padding, where a tailor builds in shape using small stitches
