When people ask me where I’m from, I often find it difficult to say openly, “I’m from China.🇨🇳” Every time I say it, I feel an indescribable sense of shame and oppression. Many times, I wish I were Taiwanese🇹🇼, Japanese🇯🇵, or from any society that is freer and more civilized.
It is not because I hate the land where I was born. Rather, it is because I come from a country under authoritarian rule, and I firmly oppose the Chinese Communist Party. I long for a different identity—one that would not make me feel embarrassed about my nationality or burdened whenever I introduce myself to others.
