Lasers Aren't Fucking Magic, People With all the increasing hype surrounding high-energy laser weapons as low cost-per-shot solutions for drone attacks, here's a reminder of their limitations. Take a look at the footage below of US Marines testing a 5 kilowatt Compact Laser Weapon System (CLaWS) in the US Central Command area of operations back in January 2021. Note just how long it takes the system to actually disable its target once the beam makes contact -- at least 15 seconds, if not more. No instant kill like your favorite sci-fi ray gun. Laser weapons require sustained dwell time to inflict catastrophic damage on a target, a significant challenge when those targets are moving fast and engaged in evasive maneuvers. Now imagine that there are 100 of these drones attacking at the same time. Laser weapons have undeniable potential for point defense, but the current continuous wave systems that militaries are exploring are generally not suited for saturation attacks like drone swarms As I previously wrote: lasers do not defeat targets by expending discrete rounds, but by occupying time -- and time, in combat, is always finite laserwars.net/p/laser-weapon… [Video source: @DVIDSHub dvidshub.net/video/790860/m…]
