Atefeh Rajabi Sahaaleh era una joven de 16 años originaria de Neka, en la provincia iraní de Mazandarán. Una chica encantadora y alegre que disfrutaba de la vida. Un día, mientras viajaba en taxi, fue arrestada por la policía religiosa por no llevar hiyab. Sufrió días de tortura y violación a manos de los capitanes Zabihi y Molai, quienes posteriormente confesaron sus abusos en medio de las quejas de la familia y la indignación mundial. Tras ser llevada ante el juez Haji Reza, tambaleándose y sangrando a causa de las repetidas agresiones, le suplicó al juez Reza que hiciera justicia y castigara a sus verdugos. En cambio, la condenó a muerte por los delitos de adulterio y castidad. (La pobre muchacha fue violada y torturada en cautiverio). Desafiando su sentencia de muerte, se arrancó el hiyab y lo arrojó a sus pies. El 15 de agosto de 2004, fue ahorcada públicamente en una grúa en la plaza del pueblo de Neka. (El propio juez admitió posteriormente haberla violado y torturado durante los interrogatorios).
