Its not smooth to have to stand still to shoot thats the point! You have to choose between making space or dealing damage. Its a survival horror game the methodical and intentionally limited approach is to cause tension, you should feel like you're in danger when in combat.

The modern 3rd person movement in these games can feel very sloppy and inconsistent at times due to inertia and animation taking priority over actual player control, which weakens the action.
