There was a reason civilized men reacted to the horrific brutality of the Thirty Years War by introducing prohibitions on the mass killing of civilians. Killing innocents hardens the enemy's resolve, radicalizes and totalizes war, and does not meaningfully degrade a nation's warpower. Women and children are not a serious threat. The bracketing of war was one of the greatest accomplishments of western civilization. It is worth preserving.
