What's missing from young athletes' lives these days? it's the fun stuff, it's the easy stuff, it's the stuff they used to do a long time ago but somehow got forgotten when everyone's driving to practice every night or playing intournaments all weekend... It's the riding bikes It's playing wiffle ball It's going for a swim It's wrestling with your friends It's playing hide and seek in the neighborhood It's pickup hoop games It's football in the backyard It's climbing trees It's racing your friends These activities were not only fun, but they also forged athleticism, competitiveness, and structural resilience. In the youth sports race to nowhere and injury epidemic, everyone forgot about the glue that held everything together. PLAY!

Remember a player’s inner voice has likely been shaped by how they were treated as a child.. Be gentle and curious in guiding them

Effective questioning is important for coaches . We can use feedback from players to help make activities more game-like Some qs coach could ask -what are you looking at? -what are you hearing? -what are you seeing? -what do you want more of? -what do you want less of?

Disappointed not to see Bethell in England’s team for Friday. He looks a much better bet at 3 than Pope. I’m guessing they considered Pope at 6 but it would mean one less bowler. I’d try and get Bethell in now. More experience before the Ashes

County 🏏 coaches identified 10 batting “basics”.. Three were technical, one tactical, one physical and five mental.

@nigel_hallows Yes,ensure he’s not over coached. Kids will experiment if given the chance. They might copy different players but it’s important they find what works for them rather than what looks pretty

@jacricks I agree completely! Love Roos technique but don’t want him to be over coached, really mindful of that these days. Woody’s grip is slightly strong and I’ve tried for years to change it. In March I decided never to mention it again as that’s the way he wants to pick the bat up.

Thread 🧵 Play is the most natural and powerful way to learn.. It stimulates the release of dopamine, norepinephrine, GABA, serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin. Dopamine is a chemical messenger that transmits signals between neurons. It is associated with pleasure, reward (1)

@nigel_hallows Of course. I wish your boys the best. I’m a genuine believer in play allowing kids to find what is natural to them. Perfect technique doesn’t exist to me. What is effective to the individual does. And that can be found through play, imo

@jacricks I owe it to boys to give them every chance of making it. Social media gives us things that I couldn’t provide them otherwise. The chances of them making it! Very slim! But great fun trying none the less with a great education along side it! 🙌🏻

@jacricks Come and spend a week at my house mate and you will be on edge about how intense it is. I don’t get a minutes piece. Woody hit someone old women on the head a few weeks ago in sandbach services eating a 1/4 pounder with a tennis ball! Had enough of ‘play’!
