@jamessinka @ConwayAnderson A few years back, I read a really beautiful book called Paper by Mark Kurlansky who used writing to discuss how humanity deals with technologial changes. What stuck with me was how poor humans are at accurately predicting how technology will affect society.

As the authors point out, this suggests that as SARS-CoV-2 evolved, so did its mode of infection - backing up previous findings that omicron infection occurred in the upper respiratory tract (where are more sialic acid).

The most significant locus was near ST6GAL1 - an enzyme that adds terminal alpha2,6 sialic acid to glycan structures on our cell membrane - which is 1) the receptor used by influenza and 2) not associated with pre-omicron infection!

Just as SARS-CoV-2 evolved, so did the host genetics of COVID19 infection as beautifully shown in an omicron infection GWAS (151k cases | 556k controls) identifying 13 loci from @NatureGenet - 8 not found from pre-omicron infection. nature.com/articles/s4158…

People are too binary about credentials. My mental model of a PhD is that it's like having a black belt. It means you likely trained for years under a particular master, who also had a black belt, and on a certain day you were judged worthy by that master. It would be absurd to believe there aren't extremely skilled fighters without a blackbelt, who would beat most blackbelts in a fight. And there would of course be many blackbelt holders who have fallen off dramatically since the day they were certified. Neither of these observations makes a blackbelt meaningless. Same with PhDs.

When you say "all day," I assume that means you'll be sitting for hours, concentrating on a game. Thus, I would try to wear knits, rather than wovens, since they're stretchier and more comfortable. If money isn't an issue, I would check out Okochi Meriyasu or Inis Meain at No Man Walks Alone (pic 1). These are soft, comfy knits that can be worn against bare skin. For something more affordable, I would check out Bosie's Blue Mogganer sweaters, which are made from a softer Shetland wool. Sometimes Shetland can be a bit itchy, but I find these to be OK on bare skin (pic 2). If not, you can always wear them over a long-sleeve t-shirt. Alternatively, you can just wear a sweatshirt or hoodie. I like the ones from Brut Paris, which is now available in the US through their NYC store. I would personally want to wear pants that are very comfortable, which means not something super constricting. Bryceland's P13 are big, baggy cargo pants with spacious pockets for snacks (prob useful for an all-day event). De Bonne Facture makes really nice trousers with an elasticated waist, so they feel like sweatpants. Or I would just wear a fuller cut pair of jeans, such as Buck Mason's Full Saddle jeans in raw denim. Finally, for shoes, I would wear something with laces, as they can be adjusted if your feet swell (which can happen after a long day of sitting). I've personally been into Roccia Vet Sport boots lately, but your favorite pair of classic sneakers will likely work fine with everything mentioned above.
