The VA is pushing a major headline: $112 million for suicide prevention grants through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program. Across the veteran community, many organizations are celebrating, believing this funding could expand access to alternative healing modalities and community-based support for veterans in crisis. But the fine print tells a different story. Under the program rules, every eligible individual served must receive a baseline mental health screening when services begin. That screening must use a validated tool that assesses suicide risk and other mental and behavioral health conditions. Recent VA materials indicate the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) is part of that process. If that screening identifies a veteran as being at risk of suicide or having another mental or behavioral health condition, the grantee must refer that individual back to the VA for care. That requirement appears to defeat the very purpose many people believe this grant is supposed to serve. Organizations may think they are receiving support to provide alternative healing pathways outside the same systems many veterans no longer trust. But once a veteran is flagged as high risk, the structure pushes them right back into the VA pipeline. For many in the veteran community, that is not a minor detail. It is the central issue.
