@RutgersAltRoute I think checking in on all parties and asking if they are ok. If they are the bullied person talk to them about how they’re feeling. If they’re the one bullying ask them about things going on and why they think they are doing things they know they shouldn’t

@RutgersAltRoute A5: I love the idea of trying to connect Ss who may be experiencing HIB with other peers or loving adults in the building. I try to help them find clubs or outside orgs to join. I also try to remind them of their strengths and that often HIB is about the other person

@RutgersAltRoute A3: If classrooms are not safe places, it's really hard for everyone to learn. Ss may be reluctant to speak up and/or participate. Ss who are dealing with HIB may be avoidant. I also think that it is hard for teachers to always know what is happening in hallways, ect

@RutgersAltRoute #TeacherEd #SafeSchools A3: To address HIB, we hold monthly parent meetings where parents can bring their concerns about what they see in the schools. They also tell the districts how well SEL is working at home. We collaborate with parents on ways they can be positive w/children

@RutgersAltRoute A3: 1 thing that I try to do is lead with empathy. I try to serve as a role model through my language and actions. I also see partner schools with WellCheq (@CheqWell) sharing some of the anonymous emotional reports with Ss, so they can see that others may have similar feelings

@RutgersAltRoute A2: I always try to lead with strengths whether that is for the student and/or the other class. For example, I know that this teacher does a great job with XXX, how are they supporting this student with Y? And/or how do you handle Y with student X? #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

@RutgersAltRoute I have an extensive orientation within my classroom with all of my students as to what constitutes bullying. I also have a chart that I refer to when I am redirecting a student away from a behavior pattern that is moving in the direction of bullying.

@RutgersAltRoute A1: As a PE teacher, I try to ensure that my classroom is a safe place where students can embrace their differences.Trying a new physical skill in front of peers can be tough. I try to foster an environment where there are no failures, just progress. Students cheer on each other!
