Kurdish soccer successes have stretched beyond the World Cup this year. In Turkey, Amedspor, the indomitable soccer team based in the largest Kurdish-majority province, Diyarbakir, rose to the Super League, making it the first Kurdish club to achieve that distinction. In Syria, Al-Hilal SC, a team from Hasakah province, a major Kurdish cultural and political hub, broke into the country’s top division for the first time this year as well.

If you want to see what awaits refugees seeking asylum following the European Parliament’s 17 June decision to “send them back,” all you have to do is look at what Australia has done to Kurdish refugee Hatam Yekta from Rojhilat of Kurdistan. Hatam has been held in offshore detention for almost thirteen years, a reality that has left him critically ill and on the brink of death. No one can look at the difference between these two photographs and still consider offshore detention humane.
In fact, it is precisely its inhumanity that is weaponised as a tool of control; a tool of violence designed to deter future refugees. But in the words of Somali-British poet Warsan Shire, “No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark.”
Other Kurdish refugees who sought refuge in Australia, including Behrouz Boochani, Mostafa Azimitabar and Farhad Bandesh, have been subjected to detention that resulted in severe human rights violations. These practices have been repeatedly condemned as cruel, inhumane and contrary to international law, yet Australia has refused to change course.
Australia conveniently shifts responsibility onto Papua New Guinea while ignoring the reality that it is a developing nation facing poverty, limited healthcare infrastructure, unemployment and shortages in public services. Poor and struggling nations are made the keepers of refugees, and when abuses occur, they are blamed for them as well.
The right to seek refuge is an undeniable human right. Yet to seek refuge and be erased from existence; to spend years, even decades, behind bars, robbed of hope, dignity and integrity, is what Australia, and soon Europe, considers a just response to forced migration. Migration driven by their wars, exploitation, destruction and interventions across the developing world.
Offshore detention centres are dangerous, unregulated spaces where human rights abuses are rife. They are neither humane nor lawful. They are instruments of deterrence built on suffering and ceaseless punishment, and their victims are among the world’s most vulnerable people.

The government of al-Qaeda in Damascus has, until now, not released all the kidnapped Kurds from its prisons. It is delaying and bargaining over them in order to pressure the Kurds and their leaders, under orders from the terrorist Turkish government.
The families of the kidnapped people are calling on the guarantor states to pressure the Damascus government to release their sons and not use them as bargaining chips.

#Syria | #Damascus: Mor Elias church commemorates the first anniversary of the bombing that claimed the lives of many of its parish.
Last Friday, the Mor Elias church held a ceremony to commemorate the memory of its martyrs who fell last year in the suicide bombing that targeted the church during a mass.
The attack claimed the lives of 25 martyrs and injured 63 others.
However, a year has passed and though STG claimed it made arrests and raided an "ISIS" cell that was responsible for the attack, no trials, indictments, sentences or anything has taken place raising questions on STG's transparency and involvement in the attacks, as some speculate the attackers were involved with the MoD and accusations of the security forces allowing the attack to be carried out via letting the explosive ladden terrorists through its checkpoints.
One year later, the culprits have vanished and justice remains unfulfilled as if the parties involved are betting on the tragic event being buried and forgotten. This however isn't the case for the grief stricken families who have so many questions screaming for answers and wounds crying for justice.
