There's gonna be a lot of #BlueJays Opening Day roster discourse the next few days.
But, a reminder, NONE of the six pitchers the Jays used on Opening Day last year were on the postseason roster. Three weren't even in the org.

Normally, you'd just divide the $107M by 7 years to get the new AAV ($15,285,714). But the Phillies will be overcharged by $4.75M across 2025-26, so that gets subtracted out of the new AAV calculation. So Sánchez's AAV is $102.25M / 7 years ($14,607,143), instead.

Extremely minor/niche CBT thing here: because Sánchez's CBT hit for 2025-26 is $5.625M, based on the original 4y/$22.5M value of his first contract, but he'll only actually *earn* $6.5M for the two years ($3.25M AAV), his new contract's AAV is slightly lower (1/2).

To elaborate, the implication here is that a player and his representation would never have thought to ask for more money to overwrite a prior contract until they saw Sánchez and Mato did the same? That doesn't track to me

It's only a precedent, by definition, if it's actually used in further analogous negotiations for other pitchers. Other teams can simply... not do what the Phillies did if asked

The way the #Phillies reworked the contract of Cristopher Sánchez sets a horrible precedent for teams. Great for Sanchez, generous of the Phillies, but now a player that has far outperformed his agreed upon contract might ask his club to do the same. SXM 89 top of the hour.

Hitting two homers in a game very early on in spring training did a lot to cover up that he struggled mightily after that, had big in-zone whiff problems, and didn’t hit fastballs well. Doesn’t make him any worse as a prospect but he had to force the issue and he just didn’t
