17 years ago today, BoA released her self-titled first album in English. "BoA" was one of the very first ventures by a k-pop artist into the United States market and made history as the first album by a Korean act to enter the Billboard 200 chart.

BoA for Identity (2010)

24 years ago, BoA released her first Japanese record, "Listen To My Heart." This was the first album by a Korean act to sell 1M copies and to reach #1 in Japan. Considered one of the major forerunners of the Hallyu wave, the album broke down the barrier between Korea and Japan.

FUN FACT: BoA was one of the first k-pop acts to gain popularity in LATAM. Her 2002 song "Every Heart" was used in the anime Inuyasha, which made her especially known in Brasil. 🇧🇷 Every Heart was a hit in the country and gained a Brazilian version by the band Lagosta Bronzeada.

After 'My Name,' BoA hated how people sexualized her, so she cut her hair, changed her stage look, and chose "Girls on Top" as her next single. The song faced backlash for its feminist message and BoA had to defend it, but it empowered millions of girls. Happy Women’s Day!
