I’m going to say something outrageous that’s influenced by my career observations - which I think Indian employers unfortunately don’t understand as a principle: a company’s bar for talent needs to reflect in the salaries. If you like someone enough, give them a raise you know they can’t get anywhere else because it’s a little over market rate. Therefore research the role’s market rate plus talent’s deeply. Therefore spend time on talent decisions strategically not tactically. After all that when you calculate the golden number for a talent, if it doesn’t sit right then you’re probably hiring for short term vs long term, or worse. And short term games play out exactly like this on both sides.

Interviewed a backend developer. Guy was at 21 LPA. We offered 28 LPA, roughly a 33 percent hike. He agreed and confirmed joining. Yesterday he emailed saying he got a 32 LPA offer elsewhere and now wants 36 LPA from us. Nonsense. Why agree in the first place. If you are still shopping offers just say it upfront. We stopped interviewing other candidates and waited through the notice period for the joining date. Now two days before joining, he came back with a new price tag.
