The electric blue on this faience cat statue of Bastet, attributed to the 26th Dynasty between 664 and 525 BC, almost looks synthetic. We usually picture the ancient world wrapped in dull sand, but they were aggressively chasing intensely saturated color. The startling vibrancy of this piece leaves you wondering if we are seeing authentic ancient brilliance or a clever modern illusion.
