@clark_aviation Why did they use valves? The first transistor computer was made in 1954.

Back from one of its (often rather fraught) early test flights, the prototype BAC TSR-2, with the Lightning chase aircraft behind, is marshalled back to its parking spot in the Autumn on 1964. A 'valve era' electronic suite didn't help its case to survive the 'axe' IMHO.

@WW2Airfields Nissen huts were still standing in the late 1960s, painted cream and used as offices.

On 30 September the 344th moved to their Advanced Landing Ground at Cormeilles-en-Vexin, France. This image still shows Stansted. US airmen by a Nissen hut. 🧵4/9

Here's a thread of colour images from Stansted during the war when used by the USAAF. The airfield would go on to become Stansted Airport... But here's the US using it as a heavy bomber base in 1944. 🧵1/9
