“what’s keeping you awake tonight Nat?” “oh nothing, just looking for various sources for bulk baking ingredients and doing the maths to work out cost per kg to see which is best value for money despite me being nowhere near needing 25kg of cocoa powder in one go”

@loopzoooop In the case of GBH this presumably means that anyone convicted would get the same sentence irrespective of the actual injury inflicted.

it does matter, because all of the actions of Palestine Action were taken into account when it was deemed illegal to have given them a terror designation, including the action being discussed here. there is a reason this aggravating factor was hidden from the jury and the public
Iain Rae@iainrae68

@loopzoooop Doesn’t matter as the offendes were found to involve serious damage, be intended to intimidate the U.K. government or public and were carried out for the purpose of advancing a political or ideological cause

@iainrae68 I think it’s pretty dishonest to pretend it should be normal for a jury to not know exactly what they’re potentially sentencing someone to with their conviction when they are allowed to convict based on their morals

@loopzoooop then you'll have to change the law and the judge will have to list all the possible combinations of aggravating factors for all the possible combinations of verdicts that the jury might return. or else you remove all of the aggravating factors.

@iainrae68 if the jury know what the charges are before sentencing they should also be informed of aggravating factors added to those charges retroactively considering the defendants were not arrested or charged with that aggravating factor prior to trial

@loopzoooop How can the jury be told of the aggravating factors on sentencing before they’re convicted? That’s putting the cart before the horse.

@iainrae68 the jury were not informed of the aggravating factor prior to sentencing, activists were prevented from reminding jurors that they are allowed to deliver a verdict according to their morals, and the defendants were prevented from explaining their moral reasons for the action

@loopzoooop No in this case the judge has to consider if the actions just in this case meet the requirements. The aggravating factor was not hidden he announced it and the reasoning in open court.

Hot take: you should be squeamish about making life worse for poor people. This man will just continue to be the midwife of a Reform Government, just like Keir Starmer.

🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham says he is "not squeamish" about cutting welfare spending He says he wants to get more people into work through a ten-year plan which will also increase defence spending [@thetimes]

@HybridGrizzly @keewa I happily give my phone to bus drivers to tap on with Apple Pay when i’m outside the timing for my bus pass to work, bc i’m a wheelchair user it’s awkward to tap on while using 2 hands to wheel myself up the bus. best believe i’m craning my neck to keep an eye on it though

I was just backing away from the protest and an officer grabbed me, strangled me and punched me in the face — KB518. I have several witnesses to the assault. @sussex_police

No spines were shattered at Filton. The officer walked unaided from A&E. Later a small, hairline fracture to the transverse process (the bony projection that sticks out from the side of a vertebra) was identified & the officer was advised to take paracetamol. Truth matters.

The 17-year-old girl who was stabbed in Brierfield has been released from the hospital, and I hope she makes a full recovery soon. Unfortunately, some far-right activists are spreading misinformation and trying to portray the incident as a racially motivated attack. Both the victim and the suspect are British Pakistanis. A 30-year-old British Pakistani man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Notice how Tommy Robinson stopped tweeting about it once it was announced that the 17-year-old girl is British Pakistani.

@GWannenbur15690 @Ken_Stonger the actions taken by Palestine Action in general, not this case alone, were used as justification for the proscription. however, that proscription has been deemed unlawful by the high court, the government are appealing that decision because they want to keep this precedent

@loopzoooop @Ken_Stonger I know they arrested people when Palestine Action was proscribed. I personally don't agree with it. Am I correct to say that this case was the reason it was proscribed?

@GWannenbur15690 @Ken_Stonger i’m not talking about the weapons factory action when I discuss peaceful protest. I’m talking about the 1000s of arrests made by the UK government of people holding signs in support of Palestine Action. No shouting, no violence, just holding signs. And all arrested

@GWannenbur15690 @Ken_Stonger the UK’s “democratic process” is a false one. how do we have a democracy when people are arrested for peacefully protesting? what do we expect to happen when a government begins to criminalise peaceful protest? these activists weren’t attacking people, they attacked killer drones

@loopzoooop @Ken_Stonger And, I was wrong. But I was fighting for my own country. I was not committing violent acts in the UK. SA was not a democracy. The UK has a democratic process which has been used effectively (if not completely successfully).

@GWannenbur15690 @Ken_Stonger violence becomes necessary when peace is ignored. you supported it because you knew it was necessary at the time. Mandela himself was labelled a terrorist by multiple governments for christ’s sake

@loopzoooop @Ken_Stonger When I was younger I supported violent action ( I was anti apartheid in SA). That condonation has led to us being one of the most violent societies today with 57 murd3rs per day. It's not worth it.
