A possible solution to this quandary is to leave plans for the ship's connectors as well as the route with Earth so that any future mission with better technology could send a rescue ship that could catch up to the first and transfer over the crew and resources for the rest of the journey. If technology advances, you're spared the entire wait. If technology doesn't advance, we don't hobble expansion by never sending a mission out.
