I don’t believe in 4-D chess, but I think it’s plausible that Trump deliberately sent his Mr. Deal-At-Any-Cost and Mr. I-Hate-Interventionism fully expecting this outcome, to demonstrate to anyone who cares to observe (and himself) that no deal was possible.
