nier re[in]carnation lunar tear project many japanese users had visceral reaction to this project, calling it piracy and even reporting it to square enix. in their opinion it's akin to graverobbing when people try to preserve art. some even used metaphors like "stole data from a warehouse", as if it was a shelved physical copy. if the company decides to kill a product, consumers should simply accept it and move on and never question it. but video games are art, with thousands of hours of love poured into them. in film and literature, preserving old movies and books is considered good and noble. video games are no different. if anything, it's immoral the companies treat them as disposable the moment they stop bringing profit. now the game itself is a mobile game, and it had its servers shut down in 2024, rendering it unplayable. the server code was never public and the game was never updated to work offline. lunar tear doesn't redistribute the game or use any assets, it's simply not interested in any of that. the only thing it implements is a compatibility layer and nothing else. it studies how the game is supposed to talk to the server and imagines what it is supposed to reply with. as i said, there is no blueprint for this, some of it could be inferred, some of it guessed, some remembered, but it's a genuinely hard creative effort. it's done for the love of the game by a dedicated fan who has probably spent a lot of money on the game and wants to give more despite the company not being in it anymore. so the fan decided to give time to theirfavorite game. spending hundreds of unpaid hours polishing and preserving something you love doesn't come from a place disrespect. if anything, it's a pure act of love.

This is a cultural difference that translation alone wouldn't be able to easily bridge, imo. It's a very different worldview regarding law and justice vs 義. And you see a lot of hostile/racist comments towards Japanese in such comments for having a different legal mindset.
