Embiid and terror birds show that even though the new athletic wings/mammals rule the day there is still room for a truly great throwback! (art by @JuliotheArtist, photoshop by me)

You know what else was a throwback? Terror birds! They were some of the top predators of #Cenozoic South America and some reached the USA during the #IceAge. Terror birds were a reminder of when theropod dinosaurs like T. rex and Allosaurus were top predators!

I've decided to try something new that I'm going to tentatively call #FossilAthletes. Every week(?) I'll share an athlete and say which fossil species they remind me of. Simple concept that at the very least should lead to some funny Photoshops! #scicomm

Paleotwitter, what's a really specific/niche paleo fact you think everyone should know, just for the heck of it?

@KingRexy328 Pleistocene is the game they originally promised at E3 six years ago. Holocene is what actually got released.

@JSilviria Hey Jason! Not notoungulates but I did this sort of thing with proterotheriid litopterns if that's what you're thinking of?

@Formorphology I’d like to think I’d still do some casual paleo research but then I realize I’d be the worst collaborator ever. “Oh you had a question you needed answered right away? I check my email once every 3 weeks sorry.”

#RandomActofAnatomy Evolutionary convergence can result in independent evolution of similar traits due to similar functions. But sometimes superficial similarity just...happens. I bet I could swap these bone on a gross anatomy practical exam & no one would bat an eye. @OUHCOM

@CentralCenozoic End every mammal name in -therium and no one bats an eye. Have 4 glyptodonts ending in hoplophorus and everyone loses their minds
