The Nigeria Police Force has approved the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting incident that occurred in Effurun, Delta state, on Sunday, 26 April, which resulted in the death of Mr Mene Ogidi. Following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, all officers linked to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja. There, they underwent expedited disciplinary proceedings as part of internal accountability measures. The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), alongside other internal panels, concluded its review of the case and found the principal officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, culpable of serious misconduct. According to the findings, he “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms,” with his conduct described as “unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law.” Following the committee’s recommendations, the police leadership approved the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police subsequently endorsed the decision and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for final ratification in line with established procedures. Seun Okinbaloye: You boasted you will deliver 2.5 million votes for Tinubu in 2027. Where will the votes come from? Governor Monday Okpebholo: From Edo State. People are already shouting “2.5 million votes” on the streets. Seun Okinbaloye: But in 2023, Peter Obi defeated Tinubu in Edo with 331,163 votes to Tinubu’s 144,471. There are not even up to 700,000 votes combined. Governor Monday Okpebholo: This time will be different. It is because of the work we are doing and the money Tinubu is releasing to us.

This is wild bruh. The first gist we got was that it was even kidnapping ransom the boy came to pick up and was caught. So it was sealed waybill, and was even screaming that he’d take them to whoever sent him to receive it, yet he was shot multiple times by ASP Nuhu Usman.

“I Made a Video Last Year Advising Nigerians They Should Say No To Jungle Justice, That If They Apprehend Any Suspected Kidnappers Or Thieves, The Person Should Be Handed Over To The Nigeria Police. Now It’s a Police Officer That Is Publicly Carrying Out Jungle Justice Without Any Form Of Investigation. I’m Against Police Officers Searching People’s Phones. Now Imagine Someone Like ASP Usman Nuhu Telling You To Open Your Phone At a Lonely Place And You Refuse? He Will Shoot You Direct. I Don’t Know Why Police Keep Giving Arms To Illiterate Officers. This Act The Police Officer Did No Child Or Adult Living Around There Will Ever Forget The Incident. Look At The Way People Around Him Were Praising Him After Shooting The Young Man.”

@aleeygiwa The manner in which your rogue officers summarily discharge firearms on armless citizens leaves much to be desired. ASP Nuhu Usman seems to know or be involved in something shady. He killed that boy to cover up for his involvement in something illegal or criminal.

The Nigeria Police Force acknowledges that this action was wrong. On 26 April 2026, in Effurun, Delta State, Mene Ogidi lost his life due to the unjustified use of force by a Police officer. Officers responded to a report of a suspect apprehended at Benin Motor Park with a concealed Beretta pistol. While efforts were being made to take him into custody, Asp Nuhu Usman discharged his firearm. The circumstances surrounding the incident, as reflected in the circulating video and preliminary findings, indicate a clear violation of established regulations. A man has lost his life, and a family is grieving. The Delta State Commissioner of Police has directed the Area Commander to bring ASP Usman and his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja. The Force Disciplinary Committee will review the case, followed by criminal prosecution. Accountability will be enforced without exception. The Force leadership extends its deepest condolences to Mene Ogidi’s family and assures them that justice will be served fully without compromise. To the people of Effurun and all Nigerians, your concerns are heard. The Force remains committed to ensuring that such actions are properly addressed and do not occur again.
Nigeria Police Force@PoliceNG

EFFURUN SHOOTING: POLICE ASSURE JUSTICE AS OFFICER FACES DISCIPLINARY ACTION The Nigeria Police Force condemns the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, which occurred on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State. Preliminary reports indicate that operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to credible information from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway regarding a suspect apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition. While efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in clear violation of extant regulations, resulting in the death of the suspect. The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has directed the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they would face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution. The Inspector-General of Police extends his condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be served in accordance with the law. He further urges members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes take their course. The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct that undermines public trust. DCP ANTHONY OKON PLACID, psc(+), mnipr, mni Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja 28th April 2026
