Looking at his career, many of his biggest achievements are surrounded by controversy. From the growth hormone treatment before turning professional, to Argentina’s Olympic triumph, the Ballon d’Or awards especially 2010, which should have gone Iniesta, 2019, 2021 and 2023 and Barcelona’s involvement in the Negreira refereeing scandal, there have always been questions surrounding his legacy. The same applies to his Argentina’s international success. For many years, Messi struggled to win a major international trophy. Then the Copa América schedule changed from being held every four years to being held more frequently, giving him additional opportunities to win the tournament. The 2022 World Cup was filled with controversial decisions in Argentina’s favor, and the same concerns have continued into the 2026 World Cup. Those controversies have damaged Messi’s legacy. Messi is undoubtedly one of the greatest footballers of all time, but he will never be the GOAT in my eyes because too many of his greatest achievements are surrounded by controversy. Cristiano Ronaldo will always be the GOAT to me because his legacy wasn’t built under those same circumstances.
