You cannot discuss the NFL Draft being in Pittsburgh without mentioning the man who transformed the draft...and the future of the Steelers
In the 60's Pittsburgh Courier writer, Bill Nunn, was responsible for selecting the black All-American team. He'd spend the fall in the deep south meeting with coaches and developed a network of over 100 schools
Despite there being virtually no black scouts in the NFL, Dan Rooney was bold and smart enough to hire Bill
Over the next 6 years, the Steelers drafted 25 players from HBCUs - more than double the league average
Famously in 1974, Bill pulled off what is still the greatest draft class of all-time. 4 Hall of Famers + Donnie Shell as an undrafted free agent (another HOfer)
His career with the Steelers last 47 years. In 2021, Bill joined 13 players he scouted as an inductee of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
