What's the most direct EFF replacement (i.e., an organization like early-2000s EFF) today?

The reason democrats can’t stop talking about “our democracy” is the same reason that almost all dictatorships today have parliaments.

@feelsdesperate Because loss of autonomy is a key leftist tenet, enabling them to control and suppress the populace.

If we have electric cars that are efficient, drive themselves, and are more or less publicly available why do we need ‘trains’ which are fundamentally a 19th century transportation technology? Just because they’re a charming historical anachronism?
big blue bird@azubarrend

@feelsdesperate Not only is this true, but technology seems to be a better long term strategy to addressing the solutions these policies are supposed to solve. I don’t need trains if my car drives itself.

@SwipeWright It’s never over. You don’t get it win, go home, and put your feet up. Libs have won so much since 1970 it’s embarrassing. Constant battle is the only fate.

If you think "it's over," just wait. If a Democrat wins the presidency in 2028, the censorship industrial complex will come back so fast you'll get whiplash. The woke haven't been defeated. They're laying low while they build up their armies in Mordor.

It's incredible the extent to which the social sanctioning engine has simply seized up. Hit pieces that would have been 5-alarm fires 5 years ago now come and go with no notice. Nobody cares, it's over.

The dog people are so ridiculous; there's no equal right to public space for dogs and children. How could there be? And the fundamental issue, aside from all the sanitation concerns, is a safety one: Your dogs do, on occasion, bite, growl, and steal from little children. They have no right to be in human establishments! They present a huge risk that parents must then manage.

If someone can commit heinous crimes and escape justice by simply claiming insanity/incompetence, that suggests the whole society is an insane asylum.

@astupple @JonHaidt We honestly need a wholesale revamp of the boundaries of what rights schools aka the government have over the bodily freedoms of children. They need to understand that children are people with full rights.

Oddly, there is no nationwide campaign to end after school detention. I nominate @JonHaidt to lead it. Professor Haidt, I bet this would help your anti-screen cause, at least in the eyes of otherwise embittered kids - at least he ended detention. I can see the research conclusions now: "After school detention was shown to significantly worsen depression, feelings of loneliness, and lack of self-worth, and actually worsened behavior and academic performance." Detention is not only medievally undignifying, it is just so obviously dumb to make being at school a punishment. Schools have evolved beyond corporal punishment and tolerating bullying. Isn't it time they abandoned solitary confinement?
Aaron Stupple@astupple

There is a thing in public school called detention. It’s actually NAMED detention, no cute euphemism like “seat time” or time spent “on task.” Try detaining any self-respecting adult for a non-crime and see what happens, but children are routinely detained, after school hours, not allowed to go home, for “crimes” like disobedience (pursuing their own interests/passions rather than what’s approved). Self respect is the point. Kids are not supposed to have self respect until they’ve sufficiently shown that they will behave. A friend recently described getting detention, the infraction was so trivial that I forgot why it was, and I was genuinely surprised that it still exists. There’s been a crackdown on bullying in school, but this medieval and legally dubious practice is still widespread. Let that sink in. What kind of deep seated irrationality tolerates a policy of after school detention?

The fine tuning argument and all manner of anthropic arguments for god in general are just manifest nonsense. But it is the sort of pseudo-sophisticated argument most midwit academic types espouse.
