Seven people are currently in the hospital after a Russian FPV drone struck an ordinary city minibus in Nikopol. Another nine received assistance at the scene. Tragically, four people were killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones. The Russians continue their deliberate terror against people in Nikopol and other cities and communities near the frontline. Just days ago, there was a cynical strike on a market in Nikopol that killed five people and injured another 28. In Kherson, civilians are effectively subjected to constant so-called “safaris”, with casualties every day. It is important that a significant number of drones are still being shot down. But when such terror against people and lives occurs daily, blocking new sanctions against Russia, attempting to weaken existing ones, and trading with Russia all look bizarre. This must not happen – not here in Europe, nor anywhere in the world – when people are simply being killed on city streets. This is a threat to everyone. Murderers always try to go further. They must be stopped immediately, decisively – and this can only be done together, through coordination and by strengthening one another in the protection of life. Thank you to everyone who is helping Ukraine!

When your country is smaller than the enemy, you must figure out their weaknesses and set priorities. How does the Russian economy work? It depends on energy. Sanctions affected it. Our deep strikes affected it. The increase in energy exports from the Middle East and the United States affected it. This means trading activity in leveraged short ETFs is now nearly equal to that of leveraged long ETFs. By comparison, the indicator reached 3.0 in October, when bullish bets heavily outweighed bearish ones. This ratio is now approaching the 2022 bear market and 2020 pandemic lows, when investors were heavily positioned for further declines. By comparison, this ratio fell to 0.4 at the 2008 Financial Crisis bottom, meaning short ETF trading volume exceeded long ETF volume by ~150%. Is the fear trade becoming too crowded?

Finland is the Happiest country in the World for the 9th year running. We also climbed up the world brand index from 7th to 5th. I am often asked why we do well in these rankings. I do not think there is a magic potion, but it helps to have a society which strives towards freedom, equality and justice. The basis of it all is a welfare society, a robust education system, a sense of security and a close attachment to nature. There is no such thing as a perfectly happy society, but providing some building blocks that give us a chance to live a meaningful life, to help others, will nudge us in the right direction during the journey of life.

🇺🇦 Ukrainian defence company Fire Point announced that it is moving to test strikes with its new FP-7 ballistic missiles on Russian targets. The FP-7 is comparable to the US ATACMS missile but costs half as much, with a range of up to 300 km. Fire Point is also developing a new FP-9 ballistic missile with a range of up to 850 km. This will allow Ukraine to strike targets in Russian territory that were previously out of reach.

Market liquidity is collapsing amid the Iran war: Liquidity in S&P 500 futures is down to just $5.1 million, near the lowest since the April 2025 "Liberation Day." Top-of-book depth has fallen -80% since the start of the year and is now -61% below the historical average of ~$13 million. Levels below $7 million usually signal market stress, according to Goldman Sachs. This means it now takes just a few million Dollars in orders to move the S&P 500 by one tick. To put this differently, every time an institution tries to buy or sell in size, the impact on the market price is now much larger than during normal market conditions. Brace for more market volatility.
