an instructor once taught me a good sex scene is like a good fight scene!! deeply rooted in & revealing character: wants, needs, strengths, vulnerabilities, power dynamics, their relationship with their body, and adding to the physical or emotional stakes of the story

on that take about skipping sex scenes: i’m of the belief that if a book has sex scenes that can be skipped without weakening your understanding of the characters and their relationship dynamic, that is a flaw within the writing itself

i think some people (maybe who are newer to fandom idk) don’t grasp the concept that fanfiction does NOT need to be loyal to canon characterisations, and it more often than not isn’t.
the whole *point* of fic is to play with/expand/completely disregard canon. that’s the fun.
