NBCC Trade Mission Follows State Visit with Real Opportunities Beyond London in Essex In a strategic move to convert high-level diplomacy into tangible economic outcomes, the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC), as part of its itinerary for the 2026 Trade Mission to the United Kingdom, hosted the “Beyond London” event in partnership with ETK Group in Essex, just one week after the recent Presidential State Visit to the United Kingdom. Positioned as a decisive next step in strengthening UK–Nigeria economic relations, the event was a high-impact B2B matchmaking and networking platform that brought together Nigerian and Essex-based businesses to explore investment opportunities, forge partnerships, and accelerate cross-border trade. While the State Visit laid the diplomatic groundwork, the NBCC is now focused on translating policy dialogue into practical business engagement, moving beyond ceremonial exchanges to real deals and sector-specific collaboration. The event was graced by a distinguished lineup of speakers and stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. Among them were Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Lagos State’s Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Councillor Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader of Essex County Council, Mike Hardaker of London Stansted Airport, Julia Gregory of the Greater Essex Business Board, and Opeyemi Abebe of the Commonwealth Secretariat, reflecting strong government backing on both sides. The highlight of the event was the sector-focused matchmaking sessions covering key industries. These curated sessions connected decision-makers, investors, and innovators with aligned interests, and discussions move quickly from introductions to actionable partnerships. By shifting the spotlight beyond the capital - London, the NBCC aims to unlock regional opportunities and broaden the scope of bilateral trade. Ultimately, “Beyond London” is a statement of intent. One that affirms that the real work of trade begins after the handshakes, in rooms where businesses connect, ideas are exchanged, and deals are made. #nbcc #trade #tradenews

Yesterday, the NBCC's Professional Services Group convened business professionals across industries for a forward-looking conversation on “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Business Success.”. Delivering the keynote, Mr. Steve Asemota, Chief Data Officer at First Bank of Nigeria Limited, explained that AI is no longer a future concept but a present-day driver of efficiency, decision-making, and competitive advantage across industries. His session challenged participants to rethink business models and embrace data-driven innovation. A major highlight of the day was the roundtable sessions across seven topical clusters, where participants engaged in practical, solution-oriented discussions, bridging theory with real-world application and sector-specific insights. More than a gathering, this session underscored a clear message: organizations that harness the power of artificial intelligence today will define the business landscape of tomorrow. The event was sponsored by Wole Olanipekun & co, Jackson Etti & Edu, Cedarview Communications Limited, Unitrust Insurance Company Limited and Maxut Consulting. #NBCC #ArtificialIntelligence #DigitalTransformation #BusinessInnovation #ProfessionalServices #AIinBusiness #Leadership #FutureOfWork

Nigeria’s Federal Government has approved the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures, introducing a broad set of tariff amendments, excise duties, and trade regulations aimed at strengthening the economy and aligning with regional trade frameworks. The measures, announced by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, took effect from 1 April 2026. The policy is anchored on the implementation of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET) 2022–2027 and includes excise duties on non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, and tobacco products, alongside the introduction of a Green Tax Surcharge. A key component is the Import Adjustment Tax (IAT), now applied to 192 tariff lines, while an import prohibition list restricts 17 items from non-ECOWAS countries. In a move to stimulate growth, the government also approved a national list of 127 items with reduced import duties to support critical sectors. Some tariffs have been lowered, including crude palm oil, now at 28.75 percent, and fully built passenger vehicles, reduced from 70 percent to 40 percent. The policy outlines a long-term transition, with most IATs set to be gradually reduced from 2027 and fully eliminated by 2036, in line with Nigeria’s ECOWAS and AfCFTA commitments. Additionally, Waste Polyethylene Terephthalate (rPET) has been added to the export prohibition list. A 90-day grace period has been granted for importers, manufacturers, and service providers to adjust to the new excise duties, which will take effect from 1 July 2026, while subsequent rates for 2027 and 2028 will commence on 1 January of each year. Existing import transactions initiated before 1 April 2026 will temporarily retain the old duty rates. Additionally, Waste Polyethylene Terephthalate (rPET) has been added to the export prohibition list, and existing import agreements before 1 April 2026 will temporarily retain old duty rates. The measures will be formalized in the Official Government Gazette, with authorities emphasizing strict compliance. Source: Premium Times
