برخلاف آن مضحکه‌ای که در سوئد به راه انداختند، سفر پهلوی به ایتالیا را نباید دست‌کم گرفت. او در ایتالیا با چهره‌هایی دیدار کرده که نمی‌توان به‌سادگی از کنارشان عبور کرد. این سطح از دسترسی، بی‌ریشه نیست؛ امتداد یک لابی خانوادگی است که از طریق واسطه‌هایی همچنان با شبکه‌های قدیمی قدرت، از جمله پیرامون خاندان ساووی، در ارتباط است. درهم‌تنیدگی ساختاری سیاست و صنعت در ایتالیا، این کشور را به بستری مناسب برای چنین تحرکاتی تبدیل می‌کند؛ جایی که می‌توان همزمان با بازیگران سیاسی و اقتصادی وارد گفت‌وگو شد و مسیرهایی برای جذب سرمایه‌گذار گشود. در گفت‌وگویی که امروز با یکی از دوستانم در سنا داشتم، همین موضوع تأیید شد: پهلوی و تیمش به‌طور جدی در پی جذب سرمایه و ساختن پشتوانه مالی هستند. با این حال، یک واقعیت مهم را نباید نادیده گرفت: با وجود تمام تلاش‌ها، آن‌ها موفق نشدند دیداری با هیچ‌یک از مقامات رسمی دولت ایتالیا داشته باشند. این خود نشانه‌ای روشن است از این‌که دولت‌های اروپایی، در وضعیت فعلی، او را به‌عنوان یک گزینه‌ی جدی به رسمیت نمی‌شناسند و حاضر نیستند هزینه‌ی سیاسی چنین انتخابی را بپردازند. از سوی دیگر، جالب است که پس از این سفر، نوعی «توفان سیاسی» در حاشیه آن شکل گرفته است؛ پرسشی که اکنون برای بخشی از فضای سیاسی ایتالیا مطرح می‌شود این است که آن دسته از سیاستمدارانی که با او دیدار داشته‌اند، این انتخاب را چگونه برای دیگر احزاب هم‌پیمان خود در ائتلاف‌های سیاسی توضیح خواهند داد. در ساختار ائتلافی سیاست ایتالیا، چنین دیدارهایی هرگز صرفاً یک کنش فردی نیست، بلکه می‌تواند تبعاتی در سطح توازن‌های درون‌ائتلافی داشته باشد. اما نکته جالب‌تر، آگاهی خودشان از وضعیت است. به‌نظر می‌رسد همان «حرکت فواره‌ای» که من از آن سخن می‌گویم، در محاسبات آن‌ها هم دیده شده؛ نوعی شتاب ظاهری که بیش از آن‌که نشانه‌ی تثبیت باشد، علامت یک اوج‌گیری ناپایدار است. بر همین اساس، این تلاش‌ها بیش از آن‌که نشانه‌ی یک پروژه‌ی پایدار سیاسی باشند، بیشتر به آخرین کوشش‌ها برای تثبیت یک موقعیت در حال افول شباهت دارند. سیاست را باید در لایه‌هایش دید، نه در هیاهوی سطحی. ایتالیا برای پهلوی صرفاً یک مقصد نیست؛ یک فرصت موقت است در دل یک معادله‌ی پیچیده‌تر که زمان، علیه آن در حال حرکت است.

Seriously Sean? David Axelrod’s daughter Lauren, who is developmentally disabled due to childhood epilepsy, lives at Misericordia, which is a Catholic Charity set up by the Sisters of Mercy in Chicago, lives there since 2002. She is cared for by the Sisters. Axelrod is an advocate for it and maybe, just maybe, he was thanking Pope Leo or was meeting him to talk about it. Not a fan of Axelrod, but as a Catholic, I’m proud to see we care for others in need regardless of political affiliation. And Pritzker met with the Pope last November because he’s from CHICAGO and he gave him “Da Pope” gifts.
