I understand that many of you are worried, upset, and angry right now because of his arrest. This is a serious moment for our country, and for a family that is waiting for answers. In that context, my words about “a teacher of English” made light of something that deserves respect and concern. I see that now. I did not intend to hurt anyone or dismiss the pain people are feeling. But I’ve learned that intention does not change impact. My comment caused pain, and for that I am truly sorry. Ugandans deserve better from each other online, especially when we’re talking about freedom, justice, and human dignity. I’ve read your replies and I’m taking them to heart. I’m reflecting on how I show up in these conversations. We can disagree, we can debate, but we must never lose empathy for one another. Please accept my apology.
