Here we go again folks Towing the caravan on another leg of our road trip (at enormous diesel fuel expense of course) from Apollo Bay, Victoria towards Ballarat, Victoria on a cool, cloudy, grey old morning, 19th March 2026. Presumably not much solar power being generated. Upon approaching Rokewood, south of Ballarat we were greeted by a distressing scene that can only be described as like some dystopian "war of the worlds" horror movie. Very large numbers of enormous, f'ugky wind turbines devastate the local landscape and almost all of them sitting completely idle, staring down ominously like some silent, oppressive, alien invasion. At the Rosewood and Mt Buniyong scenes of environmental vandalism I said "almost none working" At the Portland (Cape Breakwater) war zone I said "not a single one working". Those statements are 100% true. Onshore wind has a capacity factor of around 33% and so to match a modern high efficiency coal plant of typically 800MW (as one example) a wind turbine farm would have to have 2.4GW capacity. Thats' about 750-1,500 expensive and not very clean bird-chopping eyesores covering vast swathes of land. On top of that, you'd need grid scale batteries the size of a small town that can re-produce 800MW continuously for about 12-16 hours, so around 9.6GWH or more. Go price up those many, many billions. And on top of that, wind turbines and the batteries need replacing every 10-15 years compared to 70+ for a coal plant, so multiply your already enormous initial un-reliables outlay by about 5. (By the way, the rehabilitation of each individual wind turbine site when it is decommissioned costs about 2million dollars.) And finally, to adopt to the folly of unreliable wind (or solar) you'll need to expand and re-wire the grid which for Australia is over A$1trillion. Yeah mate, wind is heaps better.
