NEW: A cyber attack by Iran-linked hackers has paused the supply of essential medical equipment to UK hospitals.
Handala - a hacktivist group linked to Iranian intelligence - successfully breached the IT systems of a global medical technology firm supplying the NHS, pausing orders of mouth swabs and defibrillators to UK hospitals.
The group alleged on Telegram that it had carried out a destructive “wiper” attack on the firm, Stryker, in response to the bombing of a primary school in Minab, Iran.
The incident highlights a growing concern that the NHS is prone to cyber attacks which cause a “catastrophic risk” to patient safety.

I’ve not told this story before. Under the last Tory administration one No 10 director of comms lied to me so blatantly I threw my phone at the wall and considered resigning my job:

Last month my colleague @Richard_AHolmes and I published a front-page splash that No 10 put pressure on the Foreign Office to fast-track Peter Mandelson’s vetting to become UK ambassador to Washington.

BREAK: Peter Mandelson was informed he required more enhanced clearance just six days before starting his role in Washington.
A letter, written by an official at the Foreign Office, gave him a start date of the 3rd February and informed him that his diplomatic post required “DV Clearance” - developed vetting (DV) status to access highly classified material.
Under a week later, and day after Mandelson’s previously stated start date on the 4th February, the newly appointed ambassador to Washington received a further letter from the Government informing him that as well as his DV clearance he also required STRAP - a higher level of regulation granting access to sensitive intelligence material.
The letter informed Mandelson that he needed to submit a new STRAP application form, and later states that this should be submitted “at least 3 months before you are due to start at Post.”
Mandelson officially took up his role six days later.
Comes after me and @kitty_donaldson revealed Mandelson's rushed vetting process last month.

We stood by our reporting and published our findings. Today's release of files has well and truly vindicated us. Downing Street's own receipts show us: - No10 officials pressured the Foreign Office to work at "pace" to clear Mandelson before Trump's inauguration, - Mandelson was vetted in a (roughly) three week window, - He was briefed on classified material before completing his vetting, - The govt's own National Security Advisor said the process was "weirdly rushed", - Mandelson needed to obtain one of the highest levels of security clearance within six days - usually a three month process. I'm struggling to see what, if anything, was "false".

NEW: The husband of Labour MP arrested on suspicion of spying for China went on a nine-day trip to Nepal with Princess Beatrice.
David Taylor, the partner of Joani Reid MP, was arrested in London on Wednesday morning on charges under the National Security Act.
While there is no suggestion Beatrice knew anything of Taylor’s alleged activities, the photograph shows how well connected the public affairs professional was among Britain’s elite.
