All life is problem solving. Problems are inherently wonderful, solutions are merely useful.

“The thing which makes me play video games today is identical to the thing which made me play with Lego then — which is, by the way, the very same thing that makes me do science — that is, the impulse to understand things.” -@DavidDeutschOxf

Karl Popper Quotes
Karl Popper Quotes@QuotePopper·
“It is often asserted that discussion is only possible between people who have a common language and accept common basic assumptions. I think that this is a mistake. All that is needed is a readiness to learn from one's partner in the discussion, which includes a genuine wish to understand what he intends to say. If this readiness is there, the discussion will be the more fruitful the more the partners' backgrounds differ. Thus the value of a discussion depends largely upon the variety of the competing views.” — Karl R. Popper, Conjectures and Refutations, Ch. 4, p. 351 (1962)

“Apart from conversation, all the complex interactive things require a huge initial investment, except video games, and I think video games are a breakthrough in human culture for that reason." "Why is being interactive so important? Because interacting with a complex entity is what life and thinking and creativity and art and science are all about.” “Video games are par excellence a learning environment that is under one’s own control, and that prevents them from being harmful.”

Immigration and the Nature of Personhood Understanding what a person actually is implies that what's important when it comes to immigration is the existence of a culture, a set of ideas that anyone can adopt in principle. We should be careful about not importing people into Western countries that might be completely antagonistic towards Western values and institutions. We need to judge potential immigrants on the content of their minds, not the color of their skin or ethnic makeup. ~Conjecture Institute Ambassador @ToKTeacher

@ToKTeacher "Popper's epistemology is a narrow sunlit upland between two dark abysses: on one side, denials that objective knowledge exists; on the other, claims to possess certainty, and hence authority. These opposite errors meet at the bottom, in 'critical theory'." -@DavidDeutschOxf

We can see that the ancient idea that living matter has special physical properties was almost true: it is not living matter but knowledge-bearing matter that is physically special. @DavidDeutschOxf

"We all have our philosophies, whether or not we are aware of this fact, and our philosophies are not worth very much. But the impact of our philosophies upon our actions and our lives is often devastating. This makes it necessary to try to improve our philosophies by criticism." —Karl Popper, Objective Knowledge.

Good explanations are hard to come by because every part of the explanation must have a functional role that cannot be easily swapped out for any other phenomena. @ToKTeacher

"Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them." — Karl Popper, The Open Society and Its Enemies, Volume 1, 1945.

I was radicalized against school after med school when, in practice, most of what we learned was irrelevant or just wrong/inapplicable. Astonishing how much of medicine is learned by doing, and then the relevant physiology and pathology are back-filled. You could take a freshman med student, start the on the wards with a supervising doc, and they’d be fully competent and knowledgeable years before their peers even completed the MD. School is just a sorting and signaling mechanism.

The war of ideas is a Greek invention. It is one of the most important inventions ever made. Indeed, the possibility of fighting with with words and ideas instead of fighting with swords is the very basis of our civilization. — Karl Popper

Why Evolutionary Psychology Is False The mistake that evolutionary psychologists make is in thinking that people are wholly defined by their genetic knowledge. In reality, people have inborn ideas due to genetic knowledge. But all knowledge, including genetic knowledge, is rewritable using conjecture and criticism. So no idea is written in our base code in such a way that it can't be changed. So, for example, evolutionary psychologists think that IQ is an intrinsic, unchanging property of the brain architecture. But people have the capacity to think any possible thing, to simulate any possible process. So IQ is a species of knowledge that is as rewritable and malleable as any other concept. ~Conjecture Institute Fellow @tomhyde_

@mark_k I find it hard to enjoy audiobooks, as it isn't in sync with one's pace of thought. With books, I can spend hours on just one paragraph, with lots of pauses and re-reading.

Audiobook enjoyers listen up, I have a question for you 🗣️ How do you usually consume audiobooks? Are you doing something else while listening, or completely focused on it? When I'm reading books I usually do it in bed, in a very comfortable position, and fully focused.
