The harmonized and globespanning data will enable great contributions on questions of international inequalities, exploitation, dependency and unequal exchange. But we argue that their own interpretation of the data is not one of these great contributions. 3/

No questions asked: the data collection effort and resulting dataset are impressive. Nievas and Piketty gather data on trade in goods as well as services, direct transfers (such as colonial tributes), foreign investment and cross-border income flows over two centuries. 2/

Güney Işıkara and I read Nievas and Piketty's new paper, “Unequal Exchange and North-South Relations”. While their empirics are groundbreaking, we felt they get unequal exchange wrong. We also have an upcoming book we think provides the framework for a better interpretation. 🧵

@eatonak This was a deeply personal project for me, as Anwar shaped me first as an author, then a teacher, advisor and collaborator. For this article, we were able to go through his works with him and discuss our own work in his tradition. A privilege and an honor!

@eatonak Shaikh’s project revolves around clear principles: capitalism’s fundamental structures, an appreciation of empirical methods within an unapologetically theoretical approach, the identification of profits as the fuel for capital accumulation, and real competition as its structure.

@BurakGurel1980 We need to do more work to assess these cases, but these first findings indicate that might have a meaningful full picture once we account for other channels of economic imperialism such as value capture, the role of external debt (or lending) and interest, and capital exports.

@BurakGurel1980 Third, South Korea has been running a significant current account surplus all the way since 1998; and it is a net creditor, with a significant surplus in net external assets. This reiterates the notion that it is capturing value produced in other countries' production industries.
