Today is the 1st of May. In Germany, it is not just a public holiday. It is 𝗧𝗮𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗶𝘁. The Day of Labour. And Germany takes it more seriously than almost anywhere else on earth. Shops close. Streets fill. Unions march. Because in Germany, workers don't just have rights, they have 𝗕𝗲𝘄𝘂𝘀𝘀𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗶𝗻. Consciousness of those rights. The Tarifvertrag — collective wage agreement — exists because German workers fought for it and German law protects it. The Kündigungsschutz — protection from unfair dismissal — exists because a job is considered more than income. It is considered dignity. The Feierabend — the sacred end of the working day — exists because Germany decided that your time after work belongs to you. Not your employer. You. So, learning German is not just learning a language. It is learning the vocabulary of a society that decided the worker deserves protection, the day deserves an end, and rest is not laziness – it is a right. 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗶𝘁. 🌹🇩🇪

There was a time in Ghana when life did not rush you. Life waited. In the 70s, 80s and early 90s, television was an event, not a habit. When the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation opened transmission, the whole house adjusted. Chairs were arranged like a church service. Children became instantly obedient. Visitors knew better than to talk. Light going off, what we now call dumsor, was normal. If it rained, expect it. If it did not rain, still expect it. Kerosene lanterns were always ready. Life had backups. Charcoal irons kept clothes sharp. Clay pots kept water cool. No electricity, no problem. Then VHS arrived. One video deck could turn a house into a cinema. People “visited” without invitation. Someone brought groundnuts, another brought drinks, and one person controlled the remote like a minister. Forget to rewind the tape and your reputation was finished. Newspapers were chased, not scrolled. The Daily Graphic was gold. One copy, ten readers. You read over someone’s shoulder like a trained spy. By the time it reached you, the sports page was gone. Sunday evenings were sacred. Osofo Dadzie, Super O.D. Later in the 80's it was Obra with a signature tune that can call you even from the grave😄. ɔbraa aaaa ɔbra, ɔbraa ɛne woara oooo. These were not just shows. You Will be sent to call a family member just to come and watch TV. They were actually family meetings. No one bathed late. No one visited. Even noisy neighbours respected the moment Personal matters stayed personal. Family issues were handled quietly, not broadcast publicly. Today, a small argument in the morning becomes breaking news by afternoon. Radio painted pictures better than television. And there was always that uncle adjusting the antenna, asking you not to move, as if your life depended on it 😄 Compound houses turned one TV into a stadium. Commentary from viewers was louder than the programme. If the lights went off mid-show, the silence felt like national mourning. Add the self-appointed translator during English programmes and confusion became part of the entertainment. Even banks went on break. Customers waited patiently. Your bank book was a treasure. Lose it and your blood pressure would rise instantly. Life may not have been easier. There were simply fewer options. Everything felt shared. Everything felt earned. Miss a programme and it was gone forever. No replay. No rewind. No second chance. Yet somehow, in all that limitation, there was a kind of joy we did not have to search for. Today we have everything, yet something still feels missing. 5 Short lessons from that era: 🤔Simplicity still produces deep joy. 🤔Community makes ordinary moments meaningful. 🤔Adaptability is a survival skill. 🤔Privacy protects dignity. 🤔Scarcity builds discipline and appreciation. If this brought back memories, share it with someone who lived through those days 🇬🇭 and add Your memories in the comments section. let's go. Copied

@dfwberlyn Imagine my shock when I got to Europe and found it wasn’t the case. If the holiday, falls on a weekend, it stays that way! And we even do an extra work day if it falls on a weekday!

Anytime I transact business with a Muslim, I never have this contemplation of whether I have been cheated or not..I don’t cross check with other prices on the market, because I have this strong conviction that ‘Muslims don’t overprice’.
