Losing a parent sucks. Based on personal experience it sucks even worse when you have three half siblings who haven’t acknowledged your existence your entire life. I just wish I could have something to remember my good old Dad by. A T-shirt. His flashlight. A coffee mug. A screwdriver. A piece of mail with one of his doodles on it. Something. The day he passed we weren’t told for five hours. We were not invited to the funeral home to say goodbye. My father’s first wife, and their three children went. They had been divorced for thirty years. My sisters were estranged most of my life because they resented my father for starting a second family in his 40s. Where his remains were brought was a secret and even though they were immediately informed we wanted to be involved. My Mom, who was not legally separated but living apart from him was his next of kin and needed to sign off on having him cremated. That is the reason they told us where he was. The fact that my full brother and I were also his kids was never enough for them. They made sure to pay for the cremation when there because that would mean they were entitled to the ashes. When I asked about having some of his ashes since I knew that I’d never be invited to my brothers to visit him, I was met with drama and made up stories that contradicted what my Dad and I spoke of. I was told he ONLY wanted to be on my brother’s mantel. He had lived with him the last couple years of his life in a house he put the cash down for but was not allowed to have his family, or friends over in without permission. He’d say “I am just renting. It’s not my rule.” We constantly bullshitted about how unfair that was. He loved all of his kids even when they were brats. My half brother claimed Dad did NOT want his ashes to be separated. I called bullshit. The old fart once told me he wanted to be scattered. Another time he told me that he wanted me to mix him into a certain illicit substance and have hookers snort him. His only ask was that he was claustrophobic and to never put him in a coffin. We had talked about it several times and there was no way that he wouldn’t want ALL of his kids, even the two daughters who ignored him for about 20 years to have a part of him. I had to ask over and over again for a piece of him. I was a nervous wreck hyperventilating thinking I’d never have a piece of the man who taught me how to not only survive, but live. Because I did that my brother CANCELLED his funeral. Claiming he didn’t like the funeral home which was historical and beautiful. It was down the road from One Stop Auto-shop where I spent my formative years following my old man around and learned about working on cars with him. It was a place I recalled seeing out the window as a child! It was all too much and many other excuses that made no sense. He also did not inform anybody that he made this decision. My poor Aunt found out when she called the funeral home to ask about floral arrangements! Thankfully my family was able to pay for it and we quickly planned to say goodbye. Now that months have passed they are itching for the “estate” which is likely to be swallowed by debt to pay back the cremation expense. I haven’t thought about the funeral money. I just wanted to take care of Dad like he did for me. We also asked for mail pertaining to his side by side, and other items that he had taken loans out on. I wanted my sons to have it if possible because Papa loved riding them in it. They waited until after they got the repossession notices, and it was gone to give us details. We knew based on them never attempting to know their little half siblings that they did not like us, but if the table was turned we would have never treated them so terribly. Fuck you Jennifer, Jessica, and Michael. You should all be ashamed that you treated us like this for all these years. I grew up waiting to know you but at this point I’d smile as if you were a stranger then turn my head and look away. Shame on you.
