Grift not art. And the audience for the grift are clueless but don’t want to appear clueless so they go along with their cultural “superiors” by faking enjoyment & erudition until they do not realize they cannot tell the difference between art & charlatanism.
Culture Explorer@CultureExploreX

A civilization falls when it stops knowing what beauty is for. When art mocks beauty, it starts to mock greatness. When ugliness becomes normal, people stop expecting nobility from buildings, from leaders, from each other, and from themselves.

Anecdotes masquerading as facts about the larger picture of Catholic belief in the U.S. paint a distorted picture & feed incorrect narratives of a revival or rebound. The fact is that for every adult or teen baptism, 6-8 adult/teen Catholics are leaving the faith.

c. 100 baptisms in St Dominic’s in San Francisco tonight The most in the parish’s 150 year history Up 35% on last year even (which was also a record) The faith is alive here in San Francisco and if history is anything to go by, what happens in SF, follows on to the rest of the country

High speed is a central planner's dream, but there is no demand for it from Canadian citizens. Polls show people support the idea of high-speed rail because Liberals have been banging on that drum for my entire adult life. But would Canadians use it? Probably not.
Mark Marissen@marissenmark

I just came back from a trip to Japan. The Japanese could figure out how to provide their citizens high speed rail. There’s no reason why we can’t. Don’t let Pierre Poilievre deny Canadians high speed rail. If we need help and advice from the Japanese, let’s get it.

Earlier this year I found myself in Jerusalem visiting Jesus's tomb. A tourist asked me if this was where he was buried. I said yes, then added sheepishly “but it's empty”. Happy Easter.

The trans ideology is *inherently* violent. Here we have a trans person saying if city won't designate itself as a safe space for trans people -- a sanctuary city for trans community -- "you better prepare for trans people to make this a very unsafe space."
Kat Kanada@KatKanada_TM

I see you one Canadian NDP convention w/ equity cards... ... & raise you this testimony from Alphabet folks in Massachusetts where a vote is happening to make one city a “sanctuary city for trans community.” I thought this was a skit at first. ☠️

More evidence of punching above their weight: mid-level entertainers such as Hillary Swank, Swoosie Kurtz. In sports, Bob Gibson, Wade Bogg, Gorgeous George. In literature, greatest American novelist Willa Cather. And, of course, Warren Buffet. But also L. Ron Hubbard.

A few yrs back, Tyler Cowen noted that Nebraska has produced Fred Astaire, Johnny Carson, James Coburn, Marlon Brando & Henry Fonda. That's a lot of high-end entertainment talent for a relatively small state.

It is more complicated than this, including widespread adoption of the view that marriage (and children) is a capstone rather than cornerstone of life, something that is done after getting everything else accomplished rather than building a life together with a committed partner.
Harrison Faulkner@Harry__Faulkner

Pierre Poilievre addresses Canada's collapsing birthrates and calls out multinational corporations for replacing Canadian workers with low-skilled foreign workers. "If you cannot afford a home, then you have no place to raise children." "A lot of multinational corporations have abused the immigration system in order to drive down wages."

I'm going to borrow this quote from Arthur Brooks: "Well, the truth is that everybody’s too much something for me." And (relatedly?) "Kant said 0 percent self-deception is the right amount. That’s almost certainly wrong." 2/2

The @TylerCowen conversation mostly abt happiness w/ Arthur Brooks is self-recommending. is.gd/ryOMY5 Brooks says that if genetics determine 50% of happiness & circumstances 25%, then the 25% of correct habits is *more* important not less. 1/2

Stephen Lewis has died. In 1967, as an NDP MPP in ONtario, he introduced a bill to allow abortion, which later died on the Order Paper. I believe it was the first bill in Canada that attempted to legalize abortion.
