@ivanfioravanti @david_nix If GLM hits parity with the top frontier models, what does this do to the US-based industries? Can they lower their cost enough to compete? Or do they fold? And is the prospect of folding not more likely to lead to banning of offshored cloud models?

@david_nix Not at GPT-5.5 level but strong overall. Opus 4.7? Design is awesome.

Does the math really math on this? How much will you have invested up front on a machine that can handle this before the next frontier model so far outpaces it that 512GB no longer suffices for the equivalent local model? Is your 3 year prediction safe when we hardly knew what we would have today 6 months ago? There's too much uncertainty and doubt looming over the local AI value prop.
English

I was wrong
I've been saying for months that open source AI models are 6 months behind frontier
They caught up. GLM 5.2 is as good as Opus 4.8
This changes everything. If you run GLM 5.2 locally no government can take it away. You become sovereign
And even if you run through APIs, its a fraction of the cost
The battlefield is different now. If open source is as good as frontier, and people have cheaper alternatives, governments can't be as quick to regulate. It will destroy the frontier AI labs
All of this is such a massive win for the people
If you are not paying attention to local models yet, you are making a tremendous mistake

Introducing GLM-5.2: Frontier Intelligence, Open Weights - Significant improvements in coding and agentic tasks - Strong long-horizon capabilities with a 1M context window - Two levels of reasoning effort: GLM-5.2 (max) pushes the limits, while GLM-5.2 (high) strikes a strong balance between performance and token efficiency - MIT-licensed open weights - Same API pricing as GLM-5.1 Tech Blog: z.ai/blog/glm-5.2 Weights: huggingface.co/zai-org/GLM-5.2 API: docs.z.ai/guides/llm/glm… Coding Plan: z.ai/subscribe Chat: chat.z.ai

@alex_prompter I find myself only using CGPT for image generation. Grok needs to outdo CGPT on that so I can abandon it once and for all.

I’m giving away a m4 MacBook Pro!
Comment “m4” or what you’ll do with it

Give a man an M4 chip, and he will change his life .

@culturaltutor It must be the goal of the purist pursuit to find then merge value without compromise. The next stage of design should incorporate art, even as it once did.
English

@culturaltutor Not minimalism so much as purism. The evolution of design over the last half century, especially the last decade, has been a hyper focus on utility and functionality with active intent to eliminate artistic cruft. The pursuit is noble but throws the baby out with the bathwater.
