Celebrating AR Rahman 👑

Leaving politics aside, A. R. Rahman lost his charm a long time ago. He delivered consistent hits and remained a sensation from 1992 to 2000. Between 2000 and 2010, his consistency declined, with only a few notable hit songs. From around 2010 onwards, he has largely been perceived as just another music director, no different from many others in the industry. During Rahman’s decline, composers like Harris Jayaraj rose to prominence for a period and then faded away. Later, Anirudh emerged as the new sensation. It is therefore obvious that film producers tend to chase the current popular music director, as it helps their films fetch better prices from distributors. The same phenomenon happened to legendary composers like M. S. Viswanathan and Ilaiyaraaja as well. However, they never played the victim card. In fact, MSV openly praised Ilaiyaraaja, and Ilaiyaraaja attended Rahman’s Oscar felicitation ceremony and spoke highly of him. Have we ever seen Rahman similarly praising the next generation of music directors?
