Thank you for the birthday wishes, lovely people! I had an excellent day, which included this banoffee tart, and this evening involved a delicious dinner and plenty of 🍷🍷🍷 so I now feel a GRATE LUV for everyone. 🥹

@MrPhilNorman Mentioning the contestants' surnames has really gone out of style, hasn't it. Apart from University Challenge, does it still happen anywhere?

Masterspy had comedy elements to offset the seriousness of the contest. So, at the very start, did the Krypton Factor, with a round requiring contestants to write and perform a funny routine. This was soon abandoned, probably for the best.

Around the same time Granada's The Krypton Factor debuted, ATV launched The Masterspy, a Bond-themed quiz show hosted with suave elan by William Franklyn. It put up a good fight, but Gordon Burns' more austere contest won out.
