Reef balls are structures made of marine-friendly concrete used to create ocean floor habitat and protection. They mimic the natural coral reef system, which restores oysters, soft corals, and various fish to coral reefs. They can also serve as seawalls. instagram.com/p/DXNIfD_jIog/

So sad to hear about the death of Doug Allan, a pioneer of wildlife film making. He was renowned for his work with David Attenborough. He filmed a Reef Ball project in 2005 in the Cayman Islands. RIP Doug and thank you for all the amazing work! bbc.com/news/articles/…

Having a wonderful time up in Jurien Bay, where I've discovered they have a quite unique kind of cemetery. The only one of its kind in Australia and outside of the USA. Rest in Reef — ashes of the deceased are incorporated into reef balls which are then added to the artificial reef at the end of the old timber jetty. The oldest memorial is 2008 and the most recent April 2025. There are 31 memorial plaques (some with multiple names). You can read more about the initiative here: mensshed.org/the-shed-onlin… Photos are my own.
