Site-specific analysis revealed that 20% of sites are already showing significant recovery of coral cover, and 1 site showed high resilience with no reduction of coral cover over the 2023 global bleaching event. 🔗Read the full report card: reefresearch.org/our-work/resea…

🌎A message of hope for Earth Day We just released the 2025 Healthy Reefs Report card, revealing results of our annual coral reef monitoring. Following the most extreme coral bleaching event on record in 2023, the results of these surveys have become even more important.

Field results showed significant genotype differences in response in the field, with some genotypes showing higher thermal tolerance but higher susceptibility to coral disease, suggesting a trade-off in tolerance traits between genotypes.

📝Our research team has just published a new paper that investigated how different genotypes of staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) respond to increased ocean temperatures in the field through the 2023 global coral bleaching event and through lab experiments.

Coral reefs are powered, built, and protected by tiny animals working together. In Reefs Go Live: Why is Everything so Colourful?, we explored how corals support entire reef ecosystems, from generating energy with algae to building habitats and protecting coastlines.

In Cayman, these fragments are especially important. They represent some of the only remaining live Acropora coral, making every fragment count!🪸 Thanks to the Ernest Kleinwort Charitable Trust, Marfire, & an anonymous donor for supporting our coral nursery & restoration work.

The CCMI team successfully fragmented staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) in our nursery, going from 17 fragments last year to 293 now! Fragmentation helps fast-growing, critically endangered staghorn coral multiply quickly, boosting colony numbers & supporting reef recovery.
