I was going to hold off telling ye all until the biopsy results were back, but ye are practically family. Last week I had some bowel issues, the wife insisted I go to A&E on Friday morning. Some poking, probing and scans have led to a rather shocking diagnosis. 1/2

Father dies at 81. $2.7M estate. Three adult kids. He set up a trust in 1998. Never updated it. Kids can't touch principal until age 65. They're currently 52, 49, and 46. The trustee? His brother who died 6 years ago. Nobody caught it. Now a bank is the successor trustee. Charging $36,400/year in fees. The trust references his "wife" getting income. She died in 2015. He remarried in 2017. His second wife gets nothing. The trust still pays his first wife's estate. His 52-year-old daughter is a teacher. Makes $78K. Renting an apartment. She gets $14K/year from the trust but can't access principal to buy a house. The trust was written when his estate was $800K. Nobody adjusted for $2.7M. "Dad was so careful about planning." 26 years ago. Tax laws have changed many times. His family changed twice. He spent $5K on that trust in 1998. Never spent another dollar reviewing it. Now his kids are paying attorneys $40K to petition the court for trust reformation. The court might fix some of it. Decanting could help. But it's expensive, time-consuming, and not guaranteed. They're not fighting over money. They're fighting a document written for a different family in a different tax code. Your estate plan has an expiration date. Just because it's signed doesn't mean it still works. Review your estate plan every few years and with any major life change (births, deaths, marriage, divorce) . Or pay for your kids to fix it in court later.

I am a 38-year-old married man, My marriage isn't even a year old yet, but I am facing a serious crisis. I can't even concentrate at work. I married a very beautiful woman whom I dated for 5 years. During our dating years, she was wonderful. She loved my family, and they loved her back. In fact, my mother was the one who pressured me to marry her quickly so I wouldn't lose her. But just one month after our wedding, her attitude completely changed.

I am a big fan of Camilla, but you simply never share private WhatsApp messages on social media, unless under extreme circumstances that involve serious wrongdoing or potentially putting people at risk. If you do it once, everyone will be thinking twice about exchanging messages with you. You will only get the messages they're willing to put out in public on their own social media. No insights, no real conversations.

Just for the record, last Friday’s WhatsApp exchange (emojis covering my children’s faces on my wallpaper!)

I recently got admitted to an MBA program in the UK with funding, but I was initially asked to submit an English test because I am Nigerian. Given my PhD and my position as a faculty member at a top institution in North America, I questioned this requirement. Initially, they declined my request for a waiver. But after a bit more back-and-forth, they reconsidered and granted a waiver, recognizing my Canadian status. I became Canadian less than 2 years ago, so how do you justify waiving the test based on my Canadian status, when my whole life (27 years) was spent in Nigeria, an English-speaking country?

I have been sorting out my kids inheritance tax after their mother passed 6 weeks ago. What a nightmare and so unfair in every way. 1. Gifts going back 7 years taxed at 40%. 7 years if bank statements. 2. 6 months to pay IHT bill whilst burying, grieving, getting valuations, gathering 7 years bank statement, 6 months of bills, prepping house for sale (to pay the tax they have to sell their home), court then probate, selling the house. Just 6 months to do this or 7.5-8.5% interest applies!!! It’s an impossible target to meet. 3. Content valuation of table chairs, pictures and ornaments taxed at 40% This is money she paid a huge tax bill on just 3 years ago after my 32 years of work building a business and giving out over 5,000 jobs. Now just 3 years later another 40% (after tax free amount £325k jointly). It’s theft in every way. My kids (young adults) life horrified and created a lot of anxiety trying to get things valued and sold whilst burying their mother. Disgusting @Keir_Starmer a disgrace the human race and my country. Get out or get thrown out.

@AnointingN_ Londoners don't just not say thank you. They dont queue at the bus stop. They don't enter the bus in the order they arrived at the bus stop. They rarely get up for old people/children. Mind you, the bus drivers dont even say morning back.

PRAY FOR JAMAICA 🇯🇲🌧 Hurricane Melissa is not just another storm — it’s being called the most powerful hurricane Jamaica has ever faced. As our island braces for impact, I’m asking everyone, wherever you are, to stop and pray. 🙏 Heavenly Father, We lift up the people of Jamaica tonight. Cover every family, every home, and every heart under the shadow of Your wings. Speak “Peace, be still” to the raging winds and waves. Let Your mercy move faster than the storm, and Your strength stand taller than the winds. Calm the chaos, protect the island, and surround every soul with Your peace and safety. Strengthen first responders, leaders, and all those working to protect others. And when morning comes, may it bring hope, calm, and the reminder that even in the storm — You are still God. In Jesus’ name, amen. 💚💛🖤 Please share this post. Let’s fill social media with love, light, and prayer for Jamaica. The world’s eyes should be on this island right now. Praying for Jamaica

@moving_charlie Surely they would just opt for a different, less expensive restaurant? Not sure what that does for you analogy though.

You're in a group of 10 at a restaurant for a yearly reunion of old mates, and the bill arrives. One guy, who earns lots more than the others, says "I'll pay half the bill" recognising the responsibility of the privileged position he's in. Everyone else pays much less. It works. But if @garyseconomics was there, it would go differently. Gary would say "You should never have had all that money in the first place. You should pay ALL of the bill." Next time, the high earner doesn't come. Everyone has to pay twice as much when the bill comes. "But yeah, fuck the rich guy!" right?🤦 This kind of short-sighted thinking is one of the reasons (in addition to an unbalanced system which needs rebalancing) why poor people get poorer. Chasing away the people who pay the biggest share of the bill because you're jealous of them, is self defeating. You are not poor just because the rich guy is rich, which is what Gary tries to tell us. He didn't take your money. The corporate taxation system did. Yes, wealth inequality urgently needs addressing, but not with a demonstrably stupid "wealth tax".
