His death ended the era of Israeli leaders staking their careers on compromise, and the Netanyahu era was ushered in. Trump’s war with Iran was against the advice of many of his closest advisors, and the most prominent voice urging him to go ahead (other than Lindsey Graham) was Netanyahu. An influence Americans have begun to notice. As boomers who grew up seeing Israel as the underdog die off, they are being replaced by generations who grew up watching Gaza, and the numbers only move in one direction. I am a Jewish Israeli, and I completely reject any harm to Christian holy sites. But honestly… I’m very surprised. When an Israeli soldier smashed a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon – the world erupted, there was global outrage and an official investigation. But when Muslims in Lebanon broke a cross on Christmas Eve (December 16, 2025), in the Dora area near Saint Joseph Hospital, because they didn’t like the sound of the hymns and Christmas carols… silence was the dominant response. So where is the real outrage? Where is the concern for religion? Or does that concern depend only on the identity of the perpetrator?

As the Jewish state, Israel cherishes and upholds the Jewish values of tolerance and mutual respect between Jews and worshippers of all faiths. All religions flourish in our land and we view members of all faiths as equals in building our society and region. Yesterday, like the overwhelming majority of Israelis, I was stunned and saddened to learn that an IDF soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon. I condemn the act in the strongest terms. Military authorities are conducting a criminal probe of the matter and will take appropriately harsh disciplinary action against the offender. While Christians are being slaughtered in Syria and Lebanon by Muslims, the Christian population in Israel thrives unlike elsewhere in the Middle East. Israel is the only country in the region that the Christian population and standard of living is growing. Israel is the only place in the Middle East that adheres to freedom of worship for all. We express regret for the incident and for any hurt this has caused to believers in Lebanon and around the world.
