Somehow, the Kon-Tiki expedition once came up in my PL class (don't ask, I don't even remember), and most of my students had no idea what that was. And this was back in ~2002. It was one of the most amazing stories when I was a child…and then it just got forgotten?!?

@MohammadAtari90 @JoHenrich @JF_Schulz Quick q: on p. 10, policy intervention implications of Reimer et al. are discussed, but the discussion sounds like Reimer et al.'s results are associational (predictive) not causal? Or am I misunderstanding?

I really enjoyed this piece by @MohammadAtari90 that integrates two trends in social psych in the last decade: thinking of psych processes at the collective level (which has deeply influenced my thinking) and thinking of psych in historical perspectives. europepmc.org/article/PPR/PP…

@frang_u99393 This is a fully general argument for the uselessness of all empirical social science, not a specific defense of the idea that this study involves omitted variables.

I do research on parallel programming, compilers, run-time systems, and parallel algorithms. My main focus is making it simpler and safer to write efficient, scalable, and correct parallel code.

FYI: it is actually the whole point of causal & modeling assumptions that when you change the analysis to violate those assumptions the analytic results might change.
This is also the reason why we do sensitivity analyses. But I guess not everyone reads the appendices. 🤷🏼♀️

A super underrated skill: knowing what advice to take.
From what I've seen, taking the right advice is often the difference between a fast growth trajectory and a slower one.
The best folks I know are great at taking the right advice!

8 years ago my student Hannah wrote her PhD on an "app store that puts privacy first": use the power of app stores to promote privacy+ apps and demote privacy- ones. Today's ruling finally enables more-than-mockup app stores that, eg, don't prioritize apps that serve Google ads.

@rg9119 What is the domain of x? It seems like if it's the real numbers the equation only has x = 1 as a solution, for n > 0. Or maybe I am missing something.

A microcosm of my lifelong battles with math: spent an unreasonable number of hours (on and off, over weeks) trying to flesh out the details of one throwaway sentence in a larger proof. 😩

Those 3 assumptions are enough for a variable to *be* an instrument, but to *use* an instrument to get a causal effect estimate we need a fourth assumption. (Otherwise, we can only compute causally-interpretable bounds on the effect!)

@rg9119 In (1) and (2), these are instruments even if the “measured variable” is unmeasured — I reposted cartoons I had made for another thread & didn’t have one with that change.
