1st @RoundtheIsland in 7 years sailing with @robertklaschka, impressive set of results for a white sail yacht with no clutter removed. 3rd place in ISC Div 5A & 10 mtg overall in Group 5. Reason for this, we used the tidal data to our benefit rather than sailing shortest course

@sharedculture @RichardJMurphy I believe England is the only country, cetrainly only developed country in the world to have privatised its water industry.

@RichardJMurphy This is why in Scotland we have publicly owned water and waste. England instead thinks there is value in selling off infrastructure to private interests then moans about it when the private companies fail and put prices up. all essential infrastructure should be public.

There has been much discussion about the likely failure of Thames Water in the last day or so. I’ve been looking at the accounts of England’s water companies for the last twenty years. My conclusion is that they are all environmentally insolvent. So, a thread…..

@JoshuaRozenberg Every time we discuss the outcomes of public enquiries we should remind ourselves that there is no obligation on Government to adopt the lessons learnt and in many instances the response to a public enquiries findings is watered down by the same lobbying that caused the problems.

@Twiceroadsfool The challenge is knowing what you saved. One of the things that I frequently see is that the benefits (or drawbacks) of technology are rarely documented when they are being used in anger. Then on the next project they are judge the same as everything else - a cost that can be cut

@WHurst1 The challenge is that the early stage modelling that architects try to do, the tech supported thumbnail sketch stuff which is used to look at options at the early stages, is often simply ignored by the engineering consultants that follow on.

@DrSueMoss @AbigailDombey I agree, I'm thinking very specifically of my time working in a design office at the start of my career. Hearing what the senior designers were talking about on the phone was essential to understand what was going. Headphones weren't banned in the office, we policed ourselves.

@robertklaschka @AbigailDombey I guess what is possible is different for all businesses. Being in a shared space is useful for sharing expected workplace culture.

The change in working patterns has highlighted how working society is centred around neurotypical extroverts. Some people like the office buzz. For others it means they absolutely cannot concentrate or become anxious. Perhaps we need to be flexible to differing strengths? 🙂

@DrSueMoss @AbigailDombey Can you clarify what you mean by built in? I was thinking as I wrote is there a different way than simply overhearing what is happening around you.

@robertklaschka @AbigailDombey Sometimes yes - but those experiences can be built in. There's no point in them learning if they're never allowed the conditions the need to actually do their job. 🙂

@DavidHenigUK Survival at any cost trumps them all. For example, despite the rhetoric, the conservatives are the most likely group to do away with the monarchy in the event that the later cease to be defer to them. The only truth is that nothing is off the table in the pursuit of power.

Big questions as to whether national conservatism or conservative populism is actually deliverable in terms of trade barriers, low tax, yet maintained public spending at least on health, education, and law and order.

This was the dominant view of the Conservative government pre-2016, but has changed completely. Problem is that beyond 'sovereignty' it isn't clear what is positively being delivered by the new direction, or how it fits to the modern global economy.
