this is my favourite prompt of all time: “how could this be better?” reply with yours and why it rocks!

Very happy to see @adamhjk posting again. He writes many things I'm thinking, but still struggling (or afraid) to articulate.

@davidfowl Clearly. :) I regularly made pitches using that line of thinking back in 2000-2010. I was _always_ and _rapidly_ shot down. Now I run my own company. 🤣

@davidfowl What is the Microsoft business case for Aspire? Does it help onboard more customers to Azure?

@davidfowl Ahh, it supports internal use cases generically, so publishing earns goodwill even if it doesn't drive direct business? I hypothesized Aspire helped improve the optics of C#, but going multilang apphost poked a hole in that theory. :) Big investment. I was looking for the ROI.

@robmen Interally, we are using it to create a paved paths for creating secure services. This includes making it easy to develop, test and deploy services. Externally, we have that same desire but more choice. You can think of it as a place to build paved paths.

No, they don't. I was taught this in 1999 when I joined Office. Right click can never be the only way to accomplish a task because many customers will not find it. Maybe that's changed some in the last 25+ years but it doesn't sound like it.
David McGillivray@dmcgco

I was showing my wife something on my macbook at the weekend. Told her to "right click" on the trackpad. She had no idea what I was talking about. Asked a friend that came over too and was met with the same confusion. Having an existential crisis. Does no one use right click?!?

It'll be fascinating to see how this case plays out. There were a LOT of legal concerns in the early OSS days at MSFT (2004 +- 4yrs) about exactly these sorts of questions. I can't tell you how many times I heard lawyers say the word "taint". <shiver/>

The chardet open source library relicensed from LGPL to MIT two days ago thanks to a Claude Code assisted "clean room" rewrite - but original author Mark Pilgrim is disputing that the way this was done justifies the change in license - my notes here: simonwillison.net/2026/Mar/5/cha…

@robmen I’d worry these days that you would get an AI slop PR for that.

Preparing a standard reply to entitled issues. "Sorry you having trouble with your Free and Open Source software. Please return your library to where you bought it from for a full refund." This after I said I wanted to be more positive. In fairness I said nothing about being less sarcastic!

@willmcgugan I'm also pretty clear on the timeframe they need to deliver the fix to make the next release. That seems to help drive home the reality that someone has to fix it and since they have the repro and the desire, they are clearly the best person to fix it.

yeah, i think that's it for OSS. opened the tracker last night. +20 issues in less than 24h. there's absolutely not chance i can make this suistainable, especially since this is a hobby. open to ideas. i can deal with 5-10 issues per day. this is just too much.

@Aaronontheweb @mladenm This is a common misconception. Maintainers don't need _contributions_. They need _contributors_ (devs who stick around to care for their contributions) and _community_ (people who help others using the software). Contributions alone are simply more work for maintainers.

@morethan640 @mkristensen Maybe my use case is different from yours. One example: I have a large TypeScript SPA with hundreds of files. In VS Code, I can search for any text across the entire tree and the results are displayed immediately. As I edit text, the search results update immediately. VS can't.
